I guess this could be considered a pet peeve of mine, but nothing you can do about it in the corporate or working world.
There is just not much we as employees can do to avoid the mandatory meetings. I get the reasoning for having them sometimes. Annual meetings for the members of a credit union to vote in a new board (my dad was on a credit union board for a while). Quarterly meetings for sales organizations to recognize service awards and things like that.
What I always hated was the annual mandatory meeting for United Way kickoff. There was no reason to waste company/state time on a hour presentation to make you emotionally give to an organization. You are either going to give or you aren't. Thankfully, the years I worked at wildlife, they just dropped off the forms (that we had to sign whether we were giving or not) and sent out an email with a video attachment.
I am not against giving to charitable organizations, causes or schools. I buy from lots of fundraisers close to home and even in other states to help out the children of my friends (if I can).
When you work for a large corporation, sometimes the administration does things that makes the actual person in the field just scratch their head and wonder. There is no reason on the planet for me to attend a meeting regarding the company 401K if I am not enrolled in the 401K program. Trust me on this. Yet, someone I know got reprimanded for not attending a meeting on the 401K even after he informed them he does not have a 401K account.
We all have to do things we dislike doing, keep your chin up and get through it the best way you can.
