Secrets? Are they worth it?

Not sure how you feel about secrets but it has always been a touchy subject for me personally.

When I hear of a spouse keeping a secret from their partner, inwardly, I wonder why keep it a secret.

In a lot of cases secrets lead to lies and lies lead to hurt feelings, misunderstandings and arguments that are not easily gotten over.

I am not referring to keeping the 50th birthday party plans a secret for a surprise event. I am talking about spending money behind the other's back, and doing things with one child but telling that child "don't tell your mom/dad/grandma about this".  It puts the child at risk and gives them one more thing to worry about.

In my past, a little secret always led to a bigger secret and it was usually about money or a relationship the other was hiding. It was hurtful and humiliating.

So stop and think before you keep that transaction a secret! It is much better to be open and honest every day (no matter how bad the news is) than to hide something and pray you don't talk in your sleep.

Try having to tell your spouse that you got fired, that takes a lot of honesty and trust in the other person. But we got through it together because I was honest about it.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Watch the football games, cheer for your teams, fundraise for programs you believe in and lift each other up.
